Leroy Patrick Barnett
This is a casual portrait drawing of my partner Leroy who was reluctant to pose for me but nevertheless relented. The necessary quickness of the mark-making imbues the work with an energy which contrasts nicely with the stillness of his presence. His moody poise gives the portrait the edge I seek in my work.
I graduated from Glasgow School of Art's Drawing & Painting Department in 1987 and have worked with various media throughout my career. Drawing has been essential to my practice in many ways and portraiture presents a range of challenges, not least the confrontation with a traditional art form. I like to think critically and reflect on the meaning and relevance of my work in an increasingly unequal world. Embracing portraiture over the past year has given me the opportunity to develop my thinking and practice in new directions.
