My photo is a self-portrait. I wanted to capture the emotions I experienced the night I had my stroke. The use of pen torches being shone into the lens of the camera was important as it portrays that I was surrounded by doctors and the entire ordeal felt rather invasive, confusing and terrifying. I feel this image captures the beginning of my life after stroke. I have named my portrait 'Trapped’. I feel this highlights that I could not escape and was trapped in my own mind and body.

I am sixteen years old and I recently finished the Higher Photography course. Two years ago, I suffered a stroke, after which I had to relearn how to walk and learn how to be me again. I used my portfolio to capture my experience of recovery following a stroke, I wanted to be completely transparent and cover the emotional aspects of stroke recovery that is rather taboo. The process of my portfolio has proven to be very therapeutic for me as I was able to capture something that I could not put into words.
