Winner, Scottish Portrait Award in Fine Art 2018
The painting is of my friend Jané. The background is partly inspired by the view of the mountains from her home in Laide and partly by her own work when she studied tapestry at the ECA. I wanted to capture Jané’s character, her creativity and her connection to the place where she grew up.
Woman of Substance
This portrait is of my friend Doreen Cole. The title “Woman of Substance” refers to her stage name in the reggae band she performs with and was selected by herself. I think her stance and expression illustrates her unwavering strength of character often in the face of adversity, as does the sturdy brick wall in the background.
I am a portrait painter from Poolewe in the Highlands, currently working from a studio at The Drill Hall in Edinburgh. I studied at Edinburgh College of Art and had my first joint exhibition in 2015 at the An Talla Solais gallery in Ullapool.
I have always been drawn to portraiture. I enjoy the challenge of capturing not only someone’s likeness but also their personality in a painting.
