David Caldwell

Born in 1977, I grew up in Helensburgh and studied at the Glasgow School of Art, afterwards winning a bursary to study at the Royal Drawing School London. Recently, I became a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

I paint from life. This portrait was painted in my studio. It plays with multiple spaces, and brings together various elements. The Van Gogh postcard stuck to the mirror highlights the surface of the mirror as a ‘third space’, while also giving a nod to the great self-portraitist. ‘Things in Twos’ was a playful title referring to the various (in truth accidental) doubles within the picture.
