Enter the Richard Coward SPA in Photography

Entries are open from 2 April to 30 June 2019

You may enter as many times as you wish. All portraits submitted should have been created after 1 January 2015

1. READ The Rules

Please note that the SPA Photography Award is only for black and white photography. If you enter a colour photograph for this competition by mistake we will enter the image in the SPA Fine Art competition instead.

2. CHECK photograph SIZE:

You will submit a jpeg image for the first round of the competition. Please note that if your work is selected for the exhibition you will need to submit a framed and glazed printed photograph no smaller than 28 cm x 31 cm (without frame) and no larger than 65cm x 65 cm (including fame).

3. check the reasons for disqualification:

My image is best in colour! What can I do? Enter the SPA in Fine Art.

Why do you allow colour photography in the SPA in Fine Art and not in the SPA in Photography? Read here.

Every year, we have to disqualify work. Don’t let this be you. The main reasons photographs get disqualified are:

  • Artists have entered a colour photograph for a black and white competition.

  • Artists do not know the name of the person in the photograph and do not have their permission (or the permission of their estate/heirs) to show the image.

  • The work has been previously exhibited in Scotland - in a gallery, bookshop, theatre etc. This disqualification applies even if the original image was in colour and has been turned into black and white.

prepare your PHOTOGRAPh(s) for round one

For round one, submit a  JPG/JPEG image of the work. The image file should be no greater than 3MB in size and screen resolution (72 or 96dpi) is fine.

We also advise that you keep one hi-res photograph in reserve. This should be 42 cms on the longest side and 300 DPI. If your work is selected for the exhibition you will be asked to send the hi-res image for the catalogue.
