I studied under Alexander Fraser RSA at Gray’s School of Art and graduated in 1997. Since then portraiture has been central to my practice, painting directly from the live subject.
Counterpoints is a dual portrait of my friend, Helena MacGilp, and the photographer Michael Wildman, and features a self-portrait on the wall behind. The title alludes to the interplay of contrasting themes within the harmonious framework. The models exert their living presence with passive detachment while the inanimate reproduction at the compositional fulcrum engages directly with the viewer.
