Peter in Orange Jumper, Highgate, 2018
This portrait of Peter was painted in Highgate where I have my studio. Peter is a portrait and life model whom I met through a painter friend. I have been painting portraits regularly for the last two years with two other artist friends; David Caldwell (SPA 2017) and James Lloyd. I was struck by Peter's amazing orange jumper and his almost sleepy expression. This is probably one of my favourite paintings from these portrait sessions - every sitter has something interesting about them that you just have to try and pin down, and Peter had that special quality.
I graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee in 2003 and then moved to London to study on the 'Drawing Year' at the Royal Drawing School in 2007. I exhibit my work regularly and have had work selected for the BP Portrait Award, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Lynn Painter Stainers Prize, ING Discerning Eye and the Royal Scottish Academy. Through the Royal Drawing School I have completed several artist residencies at Dumfries House, Ayrshire. I am also recipient of several awards including the Aspect Prize and the Anna Miller Trust Scholarship.
