Selected for the 2018 and 2019 Scottish Portrait Award Exhibitions
Born in Glasgow, I studied at Edinburgh College of Art. I won the John Kinross Scholarship to Florence (1993) and have been shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award (2014) and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (2017).
Issy’s English Garden (SPA 2018)
'Issy's English Garden' captures moments of growth and change in life. Depicting my niece, it was inspired by a visit to my brother's house in Wiltshire. My portraits and figurative paintings focus on the sitter interacting with his/her location. Props and other details guide the eye, giving the viewer visual clues to the narrative, both literally and symbolically.
Portrait of Tony Singh MBE (SPA 2017)
Portrait of Tony Singh MBE portrays the chef in an asymmetrical composition of angled lines. He proudly, wears his kilt, customised by Scottish textile designer Jilli Blackwood. The fusion of cultures is evident in his persona and passion for Scottish and intercultural cuisine. I used colours that reflect the spices he uses; turmeric yellow in the sky harmonises with the chilli red of the turban and tartan.
