The painting is a self-portrait. The idea of retreating to a box to think and draw came to me while grieving after the loss of my father. It seemed like a good way to escape from the world. It also relates to the expression "thinking outside the box", but in this case it was creating the painting with the theme of "thinking inside the box" that helped me through that difficult time.
I’ve always painted portraits but have had a varied career as a Doctor of Biochemistry and a computer programmer. In recent years, I’ve been drawn back to art, and now create portraiture full-time.
