Portrait of Calum (SPA 2018)
The portrait features my friend Calum, a Dundee barber, set in his shop with his tools. I saw traces of the Old Masters’ portrait work within the composition, which I was eager to emphasise.
Self-portraiture is a permanent fixture in my work. I've documented myself from early childhood. This offering shows me in my home studio.
I paint portraits and cityscapes in oils, with a photo-realistic approach. I focus on depth of clarity, catching small details that are normally overlooked. Sometimes my work drifts into surrealism, where my imagination is my only point of reference. This gives me a chance to experiment while remaining true to my painting style.
Originally from Dumfries, I moved to Dundee to study Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone, where I graduated in 2004. I have been working as a full-time artist for almost 10 years and have exhibited widely.
