I grew up on a farm in Aberdeenshire, and studied at Edinburgh College of Art. My mother was an artist who taught me to observe and record nature. I still use my sketchbooks as reference for my paintings. I enjoy painting close-ups from nature as well as portraits of friends and work mainly in oil.
Roan is one of my sons. I liked the expression on his face when on a swing, and the colour of the mossy ground. The painting emerged from a series of sketches as I combined the two.
