I studied English Literature at Glasgow University before pursuing a career in photography. My professional work takes me around the world, primarily photographing theatre and classical music. My interest is in people and their stories.
This is a portrait of my friend and mentor, the theatre-maker Stewart Laing. It is typical of my style of portraiture in that nothing here was planned, set up, or even directed, and the only light was ambient, available light. We were sitting up late in my study one evening, talking and drinking, when I was struck by the arrangement of lines and by the way the light picked out both the outline of his head and the plumes of his cigarette smoke: I grabbed my camera and took this.
